Government’s Digital India Program

Finance minister Arun Jaitley said – “Technology is trying to bring about a great change in the banking industry and it is going to make saving easier and accounting of money easier.”
The aim of Digital India is to ensure that government services are made available to citizens electronically by reducing paperwork. The initiative also includes the plan to connect rural areas with high-speed internet networks. It has three core components:
- The creation of digital infrastructure
- Delivering services digitally
- Digital literacy
The Government of India has initiated a giant leap forward to transform the country into a digitally empowered knowledge economy. DI will help in leveraging India’s Globally acclaimed IT competence for the benefit of 120 Crore Indians. It will help in reducing corruption, getting things done quickly and will help in reducing paper work.
In line with the Digital India initiative, the Prime Minister’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana’ saw an opening of 15 million bank accounts on the inauguration day itself. By 05 August 2015, 17.45 crore accounts were opened, with around ₹22032.68 crore (US$3.3 billion) were deposited under the scheme. The main intention of this scheme was to provide universal access to banking facilities to every household, thus bringing new technologies and mobile banking access for the poor.

Digital banking will reduce transactions done at branch-level, thus easing the pressures of customer service as well as reducing the overall operating costs of banks. Increase usage of net banking and technology in mode of payments would reduce the frequency of unaccounted money that has been used as black money by traders and business man as well as politicians.

Key Initiatives In Digital Banking
Banks are becoming proactive in the online/mobile space as various banks in the country are launching customer-friendly apps, co-branded cards, digital wallets, handheld ATMs etc.
Here are the some of the recent initiatives in digital banking:
- HDFC Bank tied up with e-commerce portal Snapdeal to launch a co-branded credit card. The card was aimed at customers adopting digital payments.
- India’s largest private sector lender ICICI Bank introduced ‘Pockets’ – a new digital payments product for mobiles which integrated a digital wallet, a physical prepaid card and a basic savings bank account.
- Axis Bank also introduced multi-social payment application ‘Ping Pay’ to enable customers with smartphones to transfer funds, person to person, including to non-Axis Bank account holders, using varied social media channels.
- HDFC Bank introduced a mobile application called PayZapp which is a first of its kind mobile money payment solution. It is a complete digital payment solution, giving you the power to pay in just One Click.
- SBI bank launched mobile wallet called State Bank Buddy which is the first indian mobile wallet app to be available in 13 languages.
